Wow, it really depends who you ask. From the marketing side, purely for differentiation, and eye-catching appeal HTML is the way to go. From the technology side (difficulty in sending, getting through firewalls, etc) text is the only way to make sure your message gets through.
It is a tough call either way. If you send text emails, they may get through to the Inbox, but not get read because they do not appeal to the end reader. Content is king in a text email. Short and sweet with referrals back to your website is also the way to go. With HTML emails, they have harder times getting to the end reader because of email spam filtering, size limits, corporate policies, you name it. However, the originality of the graphics, layout, and visual appeal will greatly help to get the end reader to open the email and read it.
So, the moral of this story is-- look at who is receiving your emails. Are they corporate? AOL users? Are they marketers? Technology people? How you describe your end readers will help you in determining how to send to them. For example, if your end readers are mostly technology oriented, text emails are the way to go. If most of your end readers will be coming from AOL accounts, send in a format that is AOL friendly.
Ultimately, test, test, test. Try it one way and look at the responses. Next time, try it a different way, compare the two. What's the point of going to all the trouble for an HTML email if few people get it and fewer read it?
