Tips to deal with the media? - 2006/02/16 22:40 I have to do an interview with a TV reporter. It will be my first time. Any suggestions?

1. Don't get caught unprepared. Set the time. Get the reporters name and story angle. Always remember, what you say on the air, can and will be used against you! Don't ever think "off the record" will actually stay that way.
2. Prepare your key points. Tell your story. Summerize a few key points and insert them in the interview when appropriate.
3. Anticipate questions and responses. If you are ready for them you can answer them confidently.
4. Rehearse your responses. How is your voice tone? Facial expressions? What happens if they ask you something embarrassing, will you blush, stumble? If you practice your responses, they will flow better and put you more at ease.
5. Relax. If you make a mistake, appologize and ask to start again. Most reporters are used to working with "newbies" and will try to help you as much as possible.
