Links to the original sources are included when available.1. Accelerated Online Sales: We are going to see an increase in the increase of buying online. Online shopping and technology has moved beyond the early adopters and the mainstream. It is now so well established it is drawing in the laggards. Watts Wacker, Futurist 2. RSS Feeds:Not only will usage of RSS newsfeeds grow, but marketers will attempt to leverage them for advertising. e-Marketer.com "Protocols like Really Simple Syndication (RSS) and Atom have caught on among bloggers, allowing them to make their content available to anyone to pour into their own web pages.# By the end of 2006, most vendors of web publishing software will incorporate support for RSS in their products, according to Gartner." Red Herring 3. Voice-over Internet Protocol (VoIP):Businesses and consumers are finally becoming aware of voice calls over the Internet,in growing numbers. e-Marketer.com Research firm IDC predicts that "VOIP will finally go mainstream in 2005...." 4. Cross-Channel Retail:Expect increasing integration of retailer efforts across all platforms: Web, catalog and stores. e-Marketer.com 5. Small Business/Small Business Boomers:Work-at-home moms and Mr. Moms; family, weekend and eBay businesses; and Baby Boomers starting new careers on their own. Nextpert.com 6. Rise in Web Services:The ability to transmit data on the Web and make it really useful, goes the heart of Web services. By the end of 2005, 45% of companies will use Web services. Red Herring 7. Video:"In July of 2004, more than 50 percent of Internet households had graduated beyond dial-up and entered the world of always-on Internet. Never having to wait for a modem to finish its screeching connection or for a web page to slowly fill in a page with content is a life-changing experience: it is the point when the Internet becomes as essential as running water for the average household. Not surprisingly, the growth of rich media advertising has closely mirrored the growth of broadband connections. The biggest new trend for rich media ads in 2005 can be summed up in one word, and luckily it's a word that advertisers love: video. DoubleClick.com 8. Citizen Media:"Any analysis of 2004/2005 trends wouldn't be complete without the obligatory nod to the coolest web buzzwords since "peer-to-peer": blogs, social networks, wikis, moblogs, and so-on. It's still hard to know what advertisers and "traditional" online publishers should make of this trend of consumers creating their own content (aka "citizen media"), but ignoring its impact is certainly not the answer. DoubleClick.com 9. Higher Cost for Paid Search"2005 will see more advertisers bidding for more keywords and trying to achieve better performance. As demand climbs, so do click costs. Advertisers will need more sophisticated strategies, tools and services to maintain ROI. Advertisers recognize the power of search and will find ways to justify spend or allocate search investment across other marketing objectives, including branding, market research and promotional budgets.
