Save Your Budget
Seek Software Alternatives

With today's tight marketing budgets, every penny counts.  So, how can you stay competitive without sacrificing the majority of your marketing budget?

As a small business owner I got sticker shock at how much it could cost--$1,840-- to replace the basic software I use everyday.  See below.
Item Licensed Software Cost Open-Source Cost
Operating system Windows Vista Business $299 Linux $0
Office Suite Office 2007 Pro $499 Open Office $0
PDF Maker Adobe Acrobat $449 PDF Creator and Reader $0
Zip Software  WinZip $49 7-Zip $0
Backup software Genie-soft $69 Syncback $0
FTP software SmartFTP $37 FileZilla $0
Web page management Dreamweaver $399 nVu $0
Anti-virus Norton Antivirus $39 AVG Anti-Virus $0
  Total Software Cost $1,840   $0

Break away

Although Microsoft may lead you to believe that you must use the software that comes bundled on new computers, that is not the case.  There are other options available!  As the chart above demonstrates, Open-Source software can not only save us thousands of dollars but also provide the same tools as their more expensive counterparts.  I've switched and so can you.

Years ago we started assembling a list of our top Open-Source software for clients.  Tools such as screen shot capture, RSS builders, download managers, music /video managers, web software and more.  Eventually, the list grew too long.  The myMarketingGuide.com, Do It Yourself Download Tools area was created.  Now anyone (including you) can pick the everyday software you need from our pre-tested and preferred options.

What's the catch?

No catch.  Most of the software is actually "Freeware".  What's that?  It's software that companies have decided to release without a charge and usually have an "open source" license.  nxtConcepts/myMarketingGuide.com get's no perks by recommending the software (unless you include clients with more available budget).

What's open-source?
Software whose source code is published and made available to the public, enabling anyone to copy, modify and redistribute the source code without paying royalties or fees. Open source code evolves through community cooperation. These communities are composed of individual programmers as well as very large companies. Some examples of open source initiatives are Linux, Apache, and Mozilla.

Is it safe?
Yes.  We only post useful software that we've already tested.

Can I give up paying for software now that I know about open-source?
Probably not.  What you tend NOT to get with open-source/freeware are manuals, support, or a "prettied up" interface.  But, if it does the job and you can ask someone for help (remember that Instant Support we brag about?), then these are excellent business tools you do not want to miss.

What if I try one and don't like it?
No skin off our nose.  Uninstall it.  They all give you that option.

What about ads and viruses?
The one's we post should not have either (as far as we've tested).  The only thing you may find is a donation request every once in awhile from the developer.  It's up to you whether or not to donate or not.  If you enjoy the tool, by all means show your support.
